Drive and Determination

Olympia, Washington, home to the state’s capital, is just under 20 square miles of area, two miles of which is water. Located 47 miles southeast of the more populous Seattle, like its larger neighbor, it enjoys a Mediterranean climate in summer and rainy, overcast days throughout much of the year. Despite the precipitation, Washingtonians tend to be outdoorsy people with a fondness for forestry, hiking and other activities.

Evergreen College was founded in 1967, following a 1964 report in which it was determined that Washington needed another college to balance the geographical distribution. A public liberal arts college, Evergreen offered students a nontraditional curriculum to design their own study. The Evergreen State College Bulletin, in its 1973–1974 school year catalog, stated that the school was “concerned with helping prospective students determine whether they can profit from its distinctive program. The College can best serve those who have the initiative and the clarity of personal goals to which the institution can most helpfully respond. Drive and determination, a capacity for hard work, and a sense of purpose are more important than one’s previous record of attainment.” Evergreen requires its students to choose one…
